I taught myself to play the saxophone during my graduate years at Caltech. I used a 1920s Conn silver alto that I borrowed from Bill Fornaciarri. I held it together with rubber bands, string, and paper clips! When it was clear I could really play the thing, I ordered a nice new one from Yamaha. My father was working with Yamaha at the time and I got a very good deal. This was the top-of-the line horn in those days and it still holds up very well today. I have done lots of recording on this horn.
